Winnipesaukee Retreat
Private Residence. New Construction. Completed at Barrett Made.
Construction by: Carroll Country Construction & Exteriors.
The project drew its architectural inspiration from the client’s love of the rugged and unassuming Scandinavian cottages, with their lush green roofs and log siding that speckle the Northern European countryside, meets New England lake house with a minimalistic modern twist. The property is heavily wooded with large mature trees and slopes steeply down from the access road of the house towards the lake. The slope of the site terminates into a natural flat plateau near the lake that presented an opportunity for a small area between several large stands of trees towards the water, a steep ledge outcropping towards the rear, and a large natural bolder that was planned to remain throughout construction and become a welcoming landmark as one travels down the driveway to place the home to allow at-grade exterior access doors from most rooms on the first floor, which provides for great connectedness to the landscape and seamless indoor/outdoor living. The project team carefully designed a building floor plan that was spacious enough to provide unique views in multiple directions for as many rooms as possible, but oriented in a way that allowed the natural constraints of the site to enhance the house's seamless integration with the natural elements of the site.
