Portland Accessory Dwelling Unit
Private Residence. Completed at Barrett Made.
New Construction
This accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was designed for a property in Portland, Maine, where the homeowner wanted additional living space that could flex between rental income and hosting family guests. With Maine's growing demand for flexible housing and Portland's evolving ADU regulations, this project required careful navigation of setback requirements, lot coverage limits, and utility connections alongside thoughtful design that complements the existing main residence.
The design balances a compact footprint with comfortable, livable space, using simple materials, an efficient layout, and abundant natural light to create a standalone unit that feels intentional rather than incidental. As Maine homeowners increasingly look to ADUs for multigenerational living, rental income, or guest space, this project reflects Bold Coast Studio's approach to maximizing function within municipal and site constraints.
